What to bring to a Muay Thai session

Short list. Most of what gets sold as essential can wait until you know you will keep training.

Short answer

For a first session you need sportswear you can move in, water and a towel. Gloves and wraps are the first real purchase, and whether you need to bring your own depends on the gym — ask before you come. Shin guards and mouthguards matter once you move past pad work, not on day one.

Detail

What matters here

Sportswear you can move in

Shorts or leggings and a t-shirt. Nothing restrictive around the hips — kicks need the range.

Water

More than you think. Pad rounds are harder work than they look.

A towel

Both for you and out of courtesy for shared equipment.

Gloves and wraps

The first thing worth owning. Wraps protect your wrists and knuckles; gloves protect everything else.

Shin guards

Relevant once you start partner drills. Not needed for early pad work.

A mouthguard

For sparring only. If you are not sparring, it can wait.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need to buy equipment before my first session?

Check with Ali first — bringing something you do not need is the most common beginner purchase mistake.

Can I train barefoot?

Muay Thai is traditionally trained barefoot on mats. What applies at your session is worth confirming beforehand.

What size gloves should I get?

It depends on your weight and what you use them for. Ask your coach before buying rather than guessing from a size chart.
