First session
What to expect from your first Muay Thai session
The fear is always the same: that you will be thrown in with someone who knows what they are doing. That is not how a first Muay Thai lesson works.
A first Muay Thai class is mostly warm-up, stance, guard and learning to move — followed by simple combinations on the pads at low speed. You will not spar, and you do not need to be fit beforehand. Expect to feel uncoordinated for the first twenty minutes; that is what everyone feels, and it passes quickly.
Detail
What matters here
You will not spar
Not on day one. Beginner sessions are built around technique and pad work.
Being unfit is not a problem
Fitness is what training builds. Nobody expects you to arrive with it.
Soreness is normal
Expect it in places you did not know were involved — usually the core and shoulders.
Ask questions
Understanding why a movement works is what makes it stick. Asking is not slowing anything down.
Timeline
How it plays out
Talking first
What you want from training and what shape you are in. This decides everything that follows.
Warm-up and mobility
Light, and aimed at the joints striking uses most — shoulders, hips, ankles.
Stance and guard
How to stand and how to hold your hands. Unspectacular, and the foundation of everything else.
Moving
Stepping without crossing your feet. Harder than it sounds and worth the time.
First combinations
One or two strikes on the pads, slow, then slightly faster. This is the part people remember.
Cool-down
Stretching, and what to work on next time.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Do I need my own gloves for the first session?
Ask Ali on WhatsApp before you come — the answer depends on what you already have.
What should I wear?
Comfortable sportswear you can move and sweat in. Nothing specialised is needed to start.
Will I be embarrassed if I am uncoordinated?
The session is one-to-one, so there is nobody to compare yourself to. Every single person looks awkward in their first hour.
How sore will I be the next day?
Somewhat, if the session was honest. A good first session leaves you tired, not wrecked — that is deliberate.
